“Drawings from Dharamsala” is a series of drawings and mixed media installation. The theme is about the incidents of Tibetan self-immolation. More than 128 Tibetans have self-immolated since 2009. In an emotional response to, and mourning for, these incidents, Ihaya has created drawings concerning self-immolation. In each work Ihaya describes the self-immolating individual in human form along with the symbols and motifs of Tibetan Buddhist and the ritual of Tibetan fire burial. Ihaya applies visual symbols and narrative metaphors to portray each self-immolation as an embodiment of Buddha’s compassion and a pursuit of Tibet’s freedom and peace. Through the healing implications of Ihaya’s pictorial narratives, the sorrowful ending of earthy life is transformed into a journey for the deceased to return to the spiritual and dharma world. The series is not only portraits of how the Tibetans fight for their belief and ideal, but also reveal the essence of human life and Being.
